Girl Scout Cadettes Wren, Piper, Abigail, and Emma from Troop 1385 in Williamsburg took action to help keep waterways clean and healthy for people to enjoy and to protect the health of marine life. Their Silver Award project was built upon their interest in keeping waterways clean and healthy for people to enjoy and for the health of marine life.
During research on local waterway and beach issues, they found that fishing line often gets left behind due to a variety of reasons such as lack of trash cans. These Girl Scouts decided to take action and created fishing line recycling tubes from PVC materials and installed them on four fishing docks at two local parks.
The tubes are now helping keep beaches and waterways cleaner and tangle free. This will help lower the risk for fish and other animals who might eat or be harmed by discarded fishing line.
The Girl Scout Cadettes also partnered with two local merchants, Fishing Pro Tech and Tractor Supply, where they held two informational presentations for local fishermen and talked about the dangers of fishing lines in and around the waterways. To reach young fishing enthusiasts, the troop set up an information table at the Kids Fishing Derby at Water Mill Park where three of their tubes are installed.
Way to go, Troop 1385!
