Making the world a better place: Williamsburg Girl Scouts install fishing line disposals in parks

WILLIAMSBURG — At Williamsburg’s Waller Mill Park one recent afternoon, squirrels darted across the grass, flicking their fluffy tails as they hopped on the picnic table and curiously sniffed the pizza the group of Girl Scouts had brought for lunch.
The girls chased them off, laughing and out of breath, and it wasn’t long after when one of them cupped her hands gently around a tiny frog before letting it hop back along the forest edge. Their love for animals was plain to see — and it’s exactly what led them to take notice of the discarded fishing line tangled in the brush along waterways, and the potential threat it posed to wildlife.
Wren, Piper, Abigail and Emma are all Cadettes in Williamsburg Troop 1385 who recently earned their Silver Award — the highest honor given at the sixth- to eighth-grade Girl Scouting level — for designing and completing a 50-hour service project that addresses an issue or need in the community.
The girls’ proposal was Project Protect, an initiative to create fishing line recycling tubes from PVC materials and install them at fishing docks in local parks, including Waller Mill and Chickahominy Riverfront Park in James City County.
