Girl Scout Juniors Evelyn and Lucy from Troop 422 in Suffolk earned the Girl Scout Bronze Award by taking action to help animals. Their goal was to raise awareness about animal shelters and the importance of spaying and neutering pets. Throughout their project, Evelyn and Lucy gained many valuable skills and insights about recycling, kindness, and community involvement. They learned how to bake tasty treats for dogs, repurposed cookie cases into fun cat scratchers, and had meaningful conversations with shelter organizers and community members about animal welfare. Evelyn and Lucy shared their message with other students and families at Creekside Elementary School’s ‘National Night Out’ community event on August 5, 2025. Their efforts helped raise awareness about pets living in shelters and the benefits of spaying and neutering.
The Girl Scouts received support from the shelter staff and their troop leaders, Elizabeth Katen and Gwen Bunn, who helped guide and encourage them along the way. The project directly benefited the Suffolk Humane Society by providing donations and spreading important messages about responsible pet ownership. Their project helped animals while also teaching the Girl Scouts the importance of compassion and community service—lessons they will carry with them for years to come.
Giving back during childhood can lead to many positive outcomes in adulthood, including increased civic engagement, better mental wellness, and improved personal well-being. Earning the Girl Scout Bronze Award lays a strong foundation for future leadership roles and lifelong civic engagement. This milestone builds a Girl Scout’s confidence, teamwork, and problem-solving skills while she makes a positive impact in her community and beyond.
Congratulations, Evelyn and Lucy!
