Let’s celebrate the incredible work of Girl Scout Juniors Emma and Avalee of Troop 44 who earned their Girl Scout Bronze Award! The highest award a Girl Scout Junior can earn, the Bronze Award requires a team of Girl Scout Juniors to identify a problem or challenge in their community, make a plan to address it, and take action to change it for the better.
Together, these ambitious Girl Scouts decided to transform an existing little free library into a new resource. After receiving the support of Ocean Lakes Elementary School Principal, Lori Gross, the two got to work.
Caring adults like Principal Gross, as well as troop leaders and other Girl Scout volunteers, provide crucial foundations for these kinds of projects. They allow Girl Scouts to forge their own path, learn, try, and succeed (or fail) with the knowledge that a helping hand is never far away. The girl-led, volunteer-supported approach is what makes the Girl Scout Leadership Experience so transformative for everyone involved.
Using creativity, teamwork, and some Girl Scout ingenuity, Emma and Avalee repurposed the roof and door of the existing box, measuring and cutting wood to build new walls and a base. After painting the box in a vibrant green color inspired by their Girl Scout Junior vests, they filled it with essential nonperishable food, wipes, socks, gloves, and other items for neighbors in need.
Now proudly displayed in the parent pick-up/drop-off line at Ocean Lakes Elementary in Virginia Beach, Troop 44’s Blessing Box not only looks great but also embodies the spirit of giving back. We couldn't be more proud of Emma and Avalee for their dedication to helping others and making a positive impact!
Congratulations, Troop 44!
