Girl Scouts love helping others, and when it comes to furry friends, there’s no exception. While working on their “aMuse” Girl Scout Journey, Girl Scout Troop 723 of Moyock, North Carolina began brainstorming ideas on how they could help make a difference in their community. With the support of their Girl Scout leader, Ashley Livermore, the girls decided to complete a project to benefit the Currituck Animal Shelter. Through careful planning and lots of teamwork, Girl Scout Juniors Ashlin, McKayla, Ava L., Ava H., Annabelle, Alyssa, Abby, Chloe, and Hailey earned their Girl Scout Bronze Award by hosting a hugely successful item collection drive and helping the Currituck Animal Shelter check hundreds of dollars’ worth of items off of their shelter wish list.
Ashley Livermore explained how the Girl Scout Juniors teamed up to accomplish their goals. “They broke up tasks into roles they wanted to take on,” she said. “Some made phone calls to get a list of items needed, others secured booth time spots in front of Tractor Supply and Care a Lot Pet Supply. Another created a handout for each location. They made big posters and asked customers walking into the stores to make a donation for the Currituck Animal Shelter and gave each person a wish list. Not only did they help the animal shelter in a huge way, but they also learned a lot about those animals and their needs. They learned why we adopt animals, why cats should be inside, and how to read animals’ body languages.”
Items collected by the troop included food, cat litter, toys, treats, boredom busters, and chews. Friends, family and neighbors donated gently used towels, blankets, and pillows for the needs of the shelter. Together, the troop collected an estimated $1200 in donated items and received additional cash donations, which were used to shop for more items on the shelter’s wish list. Along with promoting and hosting the collection drives, the Girl Scouts handcrafted over 300 cat and dog toys, 10 snuffle mats, and also spent time reading to cats at the shelter, helping them to become better socialized for their forever families.
These Girl Scouts are excited to celebrate the completion of their Bronze Award with a troop trip to H2OBX in the spring. Congratulations, Troop 723!
