SmartFlower
Meet Daisy, our SmartFlower!
Named after Girl Scouts’ Founder, Juliette Gordon Low, whose nickname was Daisy, our SmartFlower uses advanced robotics and automation to track the sun, making up to 40% more energy than traditional stationary solar panels.
This installation is part of our Council’s promise to the environment, promoting initiatives that contribute to sustainability, efficient use of energy, and reduced electrical consumption.
Daisy was dedicated during a ceremony at her home, A Place for Girls, on October 2, 2023.
How Daisy Works 
- Compared to other traditional rooftop solar installations, SmartFlower starts producing electricity with the first rays of the sun, keeping the power supply constant throughout the day. Every day at sunset, Smartflower will automatically fold up and clean itself, then wake up at the next sunrise to start again.
- During its working day, sensors check wind velocity. If the wind exceeds 29 mph, SmartFlower retracts into its safe position to avoid damage. When winds exceed 40 mph, it retracts completely. When the wind calms, it returns to its open position to follow the sun automatically.
- With its “plug and play” system with astronomical control, SmartFlower works on a dual-axis tracking system. The fan-shaped solar module tracks the sun constantly, always oriented at a 90 degree angle with respect to the sun, even when it hides behind clouds.

Included in these lesson plans are fun activities you can do with your Girl Scout(s) to learn more about Daisy the SmartFlower, resources, energy, the sun, and making observations. Many of these activities count towards earning various Girl Scout badges, too!
