On Sunday, February 8, Girl Scouts of all grade levels came together at William & Mary’s Sandler Center in Williamsburg, Virginia, for an empowering badge workshop focused on confidence, self-love, and movement. With the help of the sisters of William & Mary’s Kappa Delta sorority, Girl Scouts earned their Body Appreciation badges—and had a lot of fun along the way!
Girls as young as 5 years old report hearing the women in their lives talk negatively about the way they look, something that becomes more prominent as they get older. The Body Appreciation badge program encourages Girl Scouts to recognize their bodies as powerful tools that help them do amazing things.
The event was organized by Mallorie Teer, Vice Chair of Kappa Delta’s philanthropy, and supported by the Kappa Deltas, including several Girl Scout alum, and Leila Reidy, who led a relaxing yoga session using techniques from her on-campus classes.
The badge program was split into two component sessions: Appreciation and Movement. During the Appreciation session, Girl Scouts celebrated what makes them unique through creative activities like self-portraits and personalized mirrors with positive affirmations. The Movement session helped Girl Scouts explore how activities like dancing and yoga build strength and support overall wellness. Girl Scouts learned that moving your body isn’t about perfection—it’s about feeling strong, happy, and confident in your own skin.
Girl Scout Brownie Eleanor from Troop 1257 said, “This badge helped me learn to love myself even more. The best part was dancing with my friends.”
Sororities can show Girl Scouts what leadership, confidence, and service look like in action. Seeing college-aged women who are engaged and giving back helps girls imagine their own futures a little bigger. Through hands-on activities, reflection, and movement, Girl Scouts learned to appreciate themselves and developed confidence that will carry into everyday life.
“I was really excited about the opportunity to partner with Girl Scouts at our event,” Mallorie shared. “I think that it’s important for younger girls to have role models, and I think the Kappas are all someone they can look up to. The workshop was such a fun way to engage Kappas in philanthropy and to host Girl Scouts on our campus.”
Thanks to William & Mary’s Kappa Deltas for creating a welcoming space where Girl Scouts could celebrate all of the amazing things their bodies can do!
