Girl Scout volunteer Kim Dominguez attended a special ceremony with her daughter, Eliana, a Girl Scout Brownie at A Place for Girls on May 31 to pay tribute to Kim’s mom, Barbara A. Dominguez, who passed away last August. “My mom was buried in Texas, so we don’t have a cemetery to visit. Having her brick here is a way for Eliana and I to come and take time to remember her in a special way.”
Commemorative bricks are offered by Girl Scouts of the Colonial Coast for purchase and are a way for families and others to honor, recognize or memorialize special people in their lives. Bricks of Honor are placed in the flagpole garden at A Place for Girls.
“When purchasing a brick for a family member or friend in this way, you can be reassured you are supporting the Girl Scout mission of helping build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place,” said GSCCC Philanthropy Director Sally Swanson. “I think it is a real comfort for Kim and Eliana to have this opportunity as a way of remembrance. Memorial bricks offer a tangible way to remember those who are gone from our sight, but not from our hearts.”

Another mom and daughter, Amanda and Evelyn Ahern, also celebrated by adding a brick during the ceremony. Their brick recognized the tradition of Girl Scouting in the family with Evelyn, a Girl Scout Daisy, being the fourth generation to be a Girl Scout. “I really liked being a Girl Scout,” Amanda shared during the ceremony, “and I’m happy that Evelyn is continuing our family’s tradition. My mom was my troop leader back in the day, and I looked forward to our meetings, especially the science experiments. While in middle school, I went to summer camp and was even the keeper of the ashes for our unit. I want Evelyn to have those same great adventures. Today, we celebrated the start of her journey in Girl Scouting. I’m sure that my Grandma was smiling down upon us while we were reciting the Girl Scout Promise.”
Girl Scouts of the Colonial Coast will be offering one more opportunity to dedicate special bricks before closing this campaign, which started nearly ten years ago in the Trefoil-shaped space. The final dedication ceremony will be held in October 2025; an exact date will be announced soon. If you would like to reserve a brick, just use the easy online order form.
