Girl Scout Cadettes Emma B. and Hannah O. from Troop 5357 in Windsor, Virginia, led by Kristen Opauski, took action to make a community gathering place more inviting and earned the Girl Scout Silver Award. They concentrated their efforts on making repairs at a community park that hosts a popular playground as well as town events. Repairs included painting picnic tables, putting down mulch, and building a stand/holder for the trash can on the property. They also added a Little Free Library!
“The park needed to have some repairs to fix some of the play areas to make it safe for children and to clean up and beautify the park for community events,” said Tracy Bailey, Emma’s mom and a Girl Scout volunteer. “Our town has a Fourth of July event every year with vendors, bands, kids’ bounce houses, and other activities. This year was special. This year this was our opening day ceremony for everyone to see what we had done to the park. We served cookies to everyone who visited our booth. The Mayor of Ivor recognized our Girl Scouts and presented a certificate for all the work that had been done.”
The girls are loving their Girl Scout experience this year and are currently working on the Cadette Outdoor Journey, so they can get a head start on working towards the Girl Scout Gold Award. Congratulations, Hannah and Emma!
