Hispanic Heritage Month is observed annually from September 15 to October 15. It is a time to appreciate and celebrate the colorful cultures, rich histories, and diversity of the American Latino community — specifically, those whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.
One of our main goals at Girl Scouts of the Colonial Coast (GSCCC) is to bring Girl Scouting to all girls, and that means taking more steps to reach our local Hispanic population. By getting our message out in Spanish, we hope to open doors to more girls, volunteers, and community partners who might not know what Girl Scouting is all about.
Here at GSCCC, dedicated staff and volunteers are key to reaching that goal. Membership Specialist Daniela Ragsdale is one of them, but she has the energy of ten! She was born in Mexico City but has lived most of her life in Aguascalientes, Mexico. After finishing high school, she made the decision to travel and relocated in 2019 to Virginia Beach. Since then, life hasn’t stopped surprising her.
Daniela has continued her education to help grow her career. She has gotten married and continues to build a life here in Virginia. She joined the staff at GSCCC in the fall of 2023 and uses Girl Scouts Spanish-language resources to connect those interested in becoming Girl Scouts from our Latin American/Hispanic community with the council.
“I love sharing the purpose of the Girl Scout program and how beneficial it could be for families,” she said. “Girl Scouts gives girls a sense of ownership in their decisions, they become strong and independent women as they learn values that will help them in their adult life. Being part of a troop opens infinite doors of opportunity that may lead to scholarships, awards and grants. Responsibility, friendship, self-discipline, and being resourceful are fundamentals of Girl Scouts. I couldn’t be a Girl Scout when I was young, but I am so glad I get to be part of it now.”
Did you know? Many Girl Scouts resources are available in Spanish and/or bilingual formats!
