When it was time for Girl Scouts in Troop 371 from Chesapeake to choose a Girl Scout Bronze Award project, they all agreed they would like to do something that benefited The Lodge at A Place for Girls, a place they love to visit and where they have held numerous sleepovers. Including art in their project was a must for this group of creative go-getters! During their visits to The Lodge, they discovered that there really weren’t any arts and crafts supplies for Girl Scouts and guests to use. So they set off to do a collection for supplies based on what they would want stocked for use, and they went a step further to create activity kits as well.
While hosting an arts and crafts supply drive and donating items was a super Take Action alone, the troop members decided there was more they could do. With permission from the GSCCC Property Team, they refinished the two cabinets in the meeting space where their “dream boxes” would reside. They also built cubby organizers and filled them with 30 small drawers that they made from recycled Girl Scout Cookie boxes. The fronts of the drawers were painted and they added decoupaged cookie knobs and labels. The last step before their “Creation Station” would be finished was to fill the drawers with supplies.
“Our Girl Scouts learned to work as a team on this project,” Alicia Udovich, leader of Troop 317 said. “They all came with their own strengths and talents. The process included learning how to compromise, narrowing down a bunch of ideas down to just a few main ideas and then creating a plan. It was a real confidence builder!”
Congratulations, Troop 371!
