June 23 is International Women in Engineering Day, and GSCCC believes that Girl Scouts of all ages can use science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to make the world a better place. Members from all over our council attended two events earlier this year to get hands-on with engineering! The programs were led by the Lady Eagle Engineers and Scientists (LEES) at Landstown High School in Virginia Beach. The group is a SWENext high school club with the Society of Women Engineers.
The LEES is comprised of 20 students (including Girl Scout Ambassador Ember C. from Service Unit 220) from Landstown High School, Home of the Governor’s STEM Academy. “Our club is a place for female students who are curious about STEM to gain leadership experience and serve their community through their shared love of STEM,” said Amee Johnson, AP Physics teacher and the club’s advisor.
At STEM Club: Automotive Engineering in February 2025, Girl Scouts learned all about the basics of engineering, including simple machines and introductory robotics. They even built different battery-powered model vehicles to take home!
At Think Like an Engineer in May 2025, the LEES led discussions about engineering careers, ran short experiments, and helped Girl Scouts to build more take-home machines with solar power!
Amee Johnson had this to say about connecting the Lady Eagle Engineers and Scientists with Girl Scouts: “The partnership between the Girl Scouts and LEES has been a dream come true! The excitement in the sessions was palpable for all involved. It is important that younger girls are exposed to STEM, and the best way to facilitate this is to have older girls fulfill this mentoring role. The flexibility of LEES members to work with the Girl Scouts on any number of STEM activities has been powerful for all involved. The Girl Scouts are exposed to various STEM disciplines, and the LEES can showcase their specialized skills, engage with the community, and grow their communication skills.”
