To many, Girl Scout cookies are just another delicious treat to look forward to each year. For Girl Scout parents and faithful volunteers like Alexis Majied, each box sold is an opportunity to teach young girls important life lessons.
“Every troop requires multiple committed adults who are willing to make the magic happen,” said Shanise Harris, public relations manager for the Girl Scout Council of the Colonial Coast. Volunteers are the heart of the youth organization and more are always welcome, Harris said.
Majied, chief communications officer for Hampton Roads Transit and mother of two girls — Anisa, 11, and Amira, 7 — takes Girl Scouts and its annual cookie program to heart.
The cookie program, a primary fundraiser, teaches each girl five important skills: goal setting, decision-making, money management, people skills and business ethics, Majied said.
“I wasn’t a Girl Scout and I really always wanted to be one,” she said.
