This scholarship contest recognizes young artists and encourages
patriotism in youth. Entries will be judged on originality,
patriotism, clarity of ideas, design technique, and total impact of
work. Girl Scouts in grades 9-12 may submit either traditional
two-dimensional or 3D art. Entries are due by March 31.
Voice of Democracy Audio Essay Competition | Learn more
Since 1947, the Voice of Democracy has been the VFW’s premier
scholarship program. Students—including Girl Scouts—compete by writing
and recording an audio essay on an annual patriotic theme. Each year,
nearly 64,500 9-12 grade students from across the country enter to win
their share of more than $2 million in educational scholarships and
incentives awarded through the program. All entries must be submitted
to a sponsoring local VFW Post by midnight, October 31.
Patriot’s Pen | Learn more
Youth in grades 6-8 are invited to enter the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen
essay contest for a chance to win their share of more than $1.4
million in state and national awards. Each first place state winner
receives a minimum of $500 at the national level, and the national
first place winner wins $5,000! The essay contest encourages young
minds to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences
in modern American society, by drafting a 300- to 400-word essay,
expressing their views based on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW
Commander-in-Chief. All entries must be submitted to a sponsoring
local VFW Post by midnight, October 31.
