For many Girl Scouts living in Virginia and North Carolina, fall is their favorite camping season. It’s no wonder, as the weather is cooler, with a crispness in the air upon rising, the campfires are warm and cozy, the skies are clear, the bugs are nearly gone, and the foliage is breathtaking — especially at Camp Darden.
Several troops who won the early membership renewal drawing last spring, which meant a free “Campapalooza” weekend at Camp Darden in late October, found just such an autumnal treasure. Youth and adult member attendees alike said it was an amazing weekend and reminded them just why they are Girl Scouts: fun in the outdoors, lots of friendship, and a feeling of being united by an extraordinary mission.
Each troop was provided with a schedule that started with a campfire program on Friday night with all the bells and whistles. Then it was pancakes and scrambled eggs for breakfast on Saturday before setting off on the day’s adventure which included canoeing, archery, hiking, and the challenge course, with the added bonus of axe throwing and the climbing wall for older Girl Scouts. Attendees also enjoyed plenty of time to rest and relax, as well as making SWAPS! Saturday night’s costume parade and contest was a hoot, the perfect addition to a Halloween season camp adventure.
We thank the GSCCC Program Team for planning and facilitating this special program for the early birds who took the challenge and renewed their membership last spring. Those who choose early renewal make sure to keep the joy, learning and development going; they know there are more friends to be made, more neighbors to be helped, more outdoors to explore, more learning experiences to be had, and more life skills to learn when they register for another great Girl Scout year!
You don’t have to win a contest to enjoy the fun and beauty of Camp Darden. It and all of our other camp properties are available to rent! Enjoy a troop trip, a service unit encampment, or a family gathering at any GSCCC camp, during the fall or any time of year. Learn more on our Camps and Facilities page at gsccc.org/rentals.
