One thing that all great Girl Scout memories have in common? They are made possible by the efforts of our amazing adult volunteers. Many of our most passionate supporters were once youth members themselves and now champion the ambition of our next generation. Say hello to GSCCC volunteer Vicki O’Neill! She was first introduced to the program as a Girl Scout Brownie, following in her mother’s and aunt’s footsteps. As a youth member, she was able to experience firsthand the way that Girl Scouts gives confidence and leadership skills to girls. Now, as a volunteer, Vicki is committed to investing her time and talents in today’s youth, and she believes that Girl Scout volunteers truly make a positive impact.
Over the last seven years, Vicki has served as a leader of Troop 1041, a multi-level troop based in Hampton, Virginia. During this time, she has also supported her troop and service unit through many other roles such as archery instructor, troop treasurer, and cookie coordinator. Vicki has an adventurous and giving spirit, something her troop also embodies. Along with a dedication to serving their community, Troop 1041 also loves the challenge of trying new things. Together, they have unforgettable experiences!

“A few years back we went to Go Ape [zip lining] and, though many of us don’t like heights, we did it together as a team. This past summer, we decided to try rafting and took a turn on the James River. We loved it and want to do it again. The best part is watching these girls grow, along with their friendships and their confidence. I love the way they support each other and others around them. I feel like I make a difference.”
Along with having amazing adventures, Troop 1041 also enjoys connecting with their community through advocacy and service.
Vicki said, “The girls really love to help people in general. When we do a project, we talk about the ‘why’ behind it and how it makes a positive impact on others. We have worked with Lutheran World Relief to make care kits every year. Those kits get sent all over the world to assist those in war-torn areas or natural disaster areas. We have also worked with domestic violence shelters, Hampton Families, Hospice, and more. We also volunteer to man the check in table at some of the local blood drives where we meet. We try to find projects that can make a significant impact to those in need.”
Each year, the troop creates a scrapbook of their exciting and memorable moments, a tradition that began in 2017 when Vicki started as a troop leader.
“In this tough world, girls need a space to just be themselves, and I feel like we provide that,” Vicki shared. “I have had parents say, ‘You've made such an impact or impression.’ I have seen it. I have seen these girls come from a tough start and grow into such wonderful young people. We give these girls skills, lessons and experiences that will help shape them and take them far in life.”
