Fall fun got underway for GSCCC members as the leaves began to change and our new membership year kicked off! Over the weekend of October 27-29, several troops were able to enjoy a stay at Camp Darden, located in Courtland, Virginia. All troops who met certain renewal guidelines for the 23-24 membership year were entered to win a free encampment for the whole troop, including meals and activities! The winning troops participated in some of our favorite camp activities while making lots of memories with other Girl Scouts. It was a fun and memorable experience for everyone involved.
The weekend kicked off on Friday evening as everyone arrived at camp to meet and greet one another, have supper, and settle into their accommodations for the night. Saturday morning started off with a yummy pancake breakfast to fuel everyone up for a full schedule of outdoor fun. Throughout the day, Girl Scouts rotated between activities which included axe throwing, archery, crafts, rock wall climbing, and more! Lunch took place fireside as Girl Scouts roasted hot dogs over the campfire. They also made a fun twist on s’mores using ice cream cones, chocolate chips, and mini marshmallows. After an exciting afternoon of field day games and activities, followed by a spaghetti dinner in the evening, troops headed back to their cabins to have one last night of fun before departing on Sunday morning.
Leah Durant, an experienced Girl Scout volunteer for Troop 130, was at the encampment with her three Girl Scouts, Margaret, Eleanor, and Alice. Leah took aim on the archery range to help demonstrate the importance of “challenge by choice” to younger girls. The Durant family spent time overseas and found a connection with Girl Scouts wherever they went. Now, back in the United States, Leah loves to help Girl Scouts in our community connect with exciting outdoor experiences, like archery, by challenging herself to learn new skills alongside her troop.
Our team had so much fun hosting Girl Scouts as we made memories, witnessed a lot of “firsts” and shared so many laughs together. We’re so grateful for all the support and enthusiasm shown by our members and look forward to even more adventures to come.
