| Tribute Funds |
Our Tribute Fund Gifts are for members and friends of Girl Scouting. It is a lasting and meaningful way to honor someone special or memorialize a loved one. These gifts may be designated to General Property or Operations Funds, or to a specific fund. The General Funds will designate your gift to the area with the most need or the greatest community impact.
With each gift, we will send an appropriate card to the individual you have designated and, we will also send you an acknowledgment that we have received your contribution.
Your generous financial support is greatly appreciated and is an investment in the future of girls and young women in our community. |

General Property Funds
- Atlantic White Cedar Restoration Tribute Fund
Eileen Metheny Carlton established this restoration project in memory of her mother, Frances Davis Metheny, who was a Girl Scout volunteer for many years. Frances was an avid gardener and a steward of plants and wildlife. This restoration project includes planting Atlantic White Cedar Hummocks and Marsh Mallow. As this Cedar stand develops, we may one day be able to nurture the Angled Hairstreak Butterfly or hear the spring mating call of the Black-Throated Green Warbler.
- A Place for Girls Tribute Fund / The Outback Tribute Fund
A Place for Girls Fund helps provide financial assistance for activities offered at A Place for Girls as well as capital improvements to the facility and grounds. A Place for Girls serves as the Council corporate offices as well as a regional recreational facility for girl members. Both after-school and a summer camp programming utilize the multiple rooms downstairs. These rooms range from a full kitchen, First Aid room, dance and music room, and an arts and crafts area.
The Outback at A Place for Girls was dedicated in September of 2000. Our Outback covers 8.5 acres and is a nature preserve – home to many species of wildlife and birds. The Outback began as a dream that slowly came to fruition. It includes three shelters, a health and fitness trail, a meandering creek (Bells Mill Creek), canoe docks, a 50-foot observation tower and a raised boardwalk for easy navigation – all in a wetland setting. Nature trails, a weather station located on the boardwalk and signage to inform our visitors of the many flora, fauna and trees that are part of our Outback experience.
- Nellie Hayse Tribute Fund
Nellie Hayse served as CEO for our Girl Scout Council of Colonial Coast for 23 years. During her tenure, Nellie accomplished many things including the construction and completion of A Place for Girls in Chesapeake, Virginia. Her dream was to have a complete recreational site for girls to enjoy nature. Part of this plan included a swimming pool so that girls could learn to swim and enjoy the water in a natural setting. This dream continues through the Nellie Hayse Tribute Fund created in recognition of Nellie’s years of service to our Council.
(There is a special task force that is specifically designated to access and project the feasibility, budget and timetable for a possible swimming pool.)

- The Buck Harris Endowment Fund
This award was established upon the retirement of Buck Harris, a former Executive Director of the Greater Tidewater Girl Scout Council. Because of her lifelong dedication to providing the finest in camping and outdoor education programming, Buck’s friends felt that this award would be an appropriate way to honor her.
Awards are presented at the Girl Scout Council of Colonial Coast Annual Council Meeting each year. Each awardee receives a framed certificate and a week of Summer Camp. All nominees who are not finalists also receive a certificate.
- The Carolina Leach Memorial Fund
This fund was established in the spring of 2004 in memory of Cadette Girl Scout, Carolina Leach who passed away that January. This fund provides financial assistance to other Girl Scouts with special needs. Carolina struggled all her life from a heart ailment. She joined the Girl Scouts as a Brownie and was active throughout her entire life. Girl Scouting gave Carolina the opportunity to participate in activities with girls her own age. Joining the Girl Scouts was a life-changing event for her.
