Girl Scout Birthday Month

Girl Scout Birthday, March 12:  March 12th is the anniversary of the beginning of Girl Scouting in America.  It commemorates the day in 1912 when Juliette Gordon Low officially registered the organization's first 18 girl members in Savannah, Georgia.

Make the World a Better Place Week, March 9-15:
Starting with Girl Scout Sunday and ending with Girl Scout Sabbath on a Saturday, Girl Scout Week comes every year on the week that includes the Girl Scout Birthday, March 12.  The Saturday to Sunday arrangement allows for our membership of diverse faiths to celebrate on their chosen day of worship.  It gives girls the opportunity to attend their place of workshop on Girl Scout Sunday or Girl Scout Sabbath and be recognized as a Girl Scout.  If a place of worship is the group sponsor, girls may perform a service, such as greeting, ushering, or doing a flag ceremony. These days can also be a time when girls explore other faiths.

Global Friendship at the Francis Land House Museum

To help celebrate the Girl Scout Birthday month, there will be an exhibit throughout the month of March at the Francis Land House Museum, titled Global Friendship. The exhibit will highlight two of the Girl Guide World Centers – the Cabaña in Mexico, and Sangam in India. The exhibit will include stories, photos and memorabilia from alumnae who have traveled to the centers.

An opening reception sponsored by the alumna Green Hat Society will be held at the museum from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 16. The museum is located at 3131 Virginia Beach Blvd and hours of operations are: Tuesday – Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closed on Monday.  There are also educational tours offered to Girl Scouts. Experience the 19th Century plantation site through activities that emphasize colonial history, crafts, songs and customs. House tours are available throughout the year for active Girl Scouts at a special rate. Two leaders are free and the Explore the Francis Land House patch is included. Call 757-431-4000 to set up a tour at the museum.
