Riding for the Kids

The Great Bridge Rotary Club members hosted their third annual Rotary Rumble for the Kids fundraiser on Saturday, May 12. Members from the Castaways Riding Club and the Blue Knights also supported the effort. This year's ride attracted more than fifty motorcycle enthusiasts. It began in Chesapeake and the ride ended at Girl Scout Camp Skimino, located near Williamsburg. Once at camp, riders and their guests were treated to lunch served by local Girl Scouts. Hampton Roads are Rotarians had an opportunity to meet and hear from Rotary International President William Boyle and his wife Lorna, a former Girl Guide. The Boyd's were visiting Virginia during their U.S. visit, which was part of an extensive international travel tour. They had recently arrived from a five day visit with Rotarians in Korea. William Boyle had been invited to the Jamestown Anniversary Weekend Celebration by Virginia District 7600 Governor Jim Probsdorfer.
The annual Rumble was a fun day for very serious causes. Proceeds from the charity event will help support Girl Scout Leadership Development Programs, Eagle Scout projects, under-privileged children in need of childcare and help fund special activities for children with terminal illnesses. This year's ride, which was in honor of Marsha New, a former Great Bridge Rotary Club President who recently died, brought in $10,626 that will be donated to designated charities.

NAWBO Gala and Silent Auction

A BIG thank you to the Southeastern Chapter of Virginia's National Association of Women Business Owners for selecting Girl Scouts as the beneficiaries of proceeds collected from their 2007 Holiday Gala auction. The funds, $5,400, will be used to operate Girl Scout Council of Colonial Coast's First Camp CEO session this summer. A total of 142 items were donated for the auction, many from Girl Scout service units and area NAWBO businesses. There were approximately  100 people in attendance, and all enjoyed great dining and music supplied by the Rock Solid band. According to Paula Smith, the NAWBO  area chapter selected Girl Scouts because the CEO project so closely aligns with the mission of NAWBO - to offer resources to business women owners and to give encouragement to those on the road to entrepreneurship success!
