Adult Recognitions

Recognition of outstanding service is an important part of Girl Scouting. Volunteers who demonstrate a positive attitude reflecting the Girl Scout principles and beliefs, and who go above and beyond expectations of their position may be recognized.

Awards Presented at the Council Level

Nominations for the following awards are due to the volunteer development department by January 31of each year.  A recognitions task group will review the nomination forms, including letters of endorsement, and will recommend approval or denial to the council board of directors.  The council board of directors will approve or deny awards and notify the recognitions task group.

These awards will be presented to recipients during the annual adult recognitions luncheon following the Annual Council Meeting.

Appreciation Pin

The candidate must be an active Girl Scout member, volunteer or staff, whose service is outstanding, above and beyond the expectations for the position held, and delivered to at least one service unit, geographic area or program delivery audience in a way that furthers the council’s goals.

Nomination Process:

An individual or group familiar with the service performed must submit an Adult Award Nomination Form that documents the service and its scope and impact to the Adult Awards Task Group.  Individuals or groups familiar with the service performed submit two letters of endorsement. Note:  persons submitting letters of endorsement must be different from the nominator.

Potential Candidates for an Appreciation Pin can include:

  • A person who develops and implements a successful family partnership that exceeds financial goals.
  • A corporate volunteer who recruits coworkers to lead or sponsor troops or provide career mentors for girls from under-represented populations in the council.

  • A Volunteer Field Administrator who has successfully established and supported a variety of program delivery methods in an area that results in increased girls and adult membership from under-represented populations.

  • A consultant who develops and implements an interactive pluralism program that helps girls and adults develop a greater appreciation of people who are different from themselves.

  • The committee chair of a highly successful product sale.

Honor Pin

The candidate must be an active Girl Scout member, volunteer or staff, whose service has been outstanding, above and beyond the expectations of the position held and is delivered to two or more service units, geographic areas or program delivery audiences within the council's jurisdiction and contributes to the council's goals and objectives.

Nomination Process:

An individual or group familiar with the service performed must submit an Adult Award Nomination Form that documents the service and its scope and impact to the Adult Awards Task Group.  Individuals or groups familiar with the service performed must submit three letters of endorsement.  Note:  persons submitting letters of endorsement must be different from the nominator.

Potential Candidates for the Honor Pin include:

  • A person who organizes and provides leadership to a successful annual giving campaign that surpasses council financial goals.

  • A trainer whose events for an area of the council receive consistently high ratings resulting in increased participation by adults from several geographic areas.

  • The director of a successful day camp that includes two or more areas.

  • An association chair who has motivated volunteers resulting in broad delegate involvement in the council’s democratic process.

  • A program consultant who implements a series of events and activities that bring girls together from different parts of the council.

Thanks Badge

The candidate must be an active Girl Scout member, volunteer or staff, whose service is truly outstanding, benefits the total council, or the entire Girl Scout organization, and is so significantly above and beyond the call of duty that no other award would be appropriate.

Nomination Process:

An individual or group familiar with the service performed must submit an Adult Award Nomination Form that documents the service and its scope and impact to the Adult Awards Task Group.  Individuals or groups familiar with the service performed submit four letters of endorsement.

Thanks Badge II

The candidate must an active Girl Scout member, volunteer or staff, who has received the Thanks Badge. Quality of service performed is the same as that for the Thanks Badge. Additionally, this award might acknowledge outstanding performance that surpasses the earlier achievement, for an extended period of time or perhaps into another field of endeavor, or in a broader sphere of influence.

Nomination Process:

An individual or group familiar with the service performed must submit an Adult Award Nomination Form that documents the service and its scope and impact to the Adult Awards Task Group.  Individuals or groups familiar with the service performed submit four letters of endorsement.  Note:  persons submitting letters of endorsement must be different from the nominator.

Potential Candidates for the Thanks Badge and Thanks Badge II include:

  • The director of a successful council program event that results in increased extension and retention of older girls and significant positive publicity for the council.

  • The chair of the council’s fund development committee who developed and implements a plan that significantly increases the percentage of adult generated funding for the council.

  • An adult who establishes a successful collaboration with a local museum or science center that results in increased program opportunities for girls from all parts of the council.

Years of Service (20 years and over)

Adults with 20 years of service or more (at five-year intervals) will be recognized by the council at the annual adult awards luncheon.


Awards Presented at the Service Unit Level

Nominations for the following awards are due to the volunteer development department by February 28 of each year.  A recognitions task group will review the nomination forms, and notify the nominating group or individual.

These awards should be presented to recipients by each Service Unit.

Outstanding Volunteer Award

The candidate must be an active Girl Scout member serving in a capacity other than a Girl Scout Leader/Advisor; who has been trained for the position held, whose service is of benefit to the service unit, and is beyond the expectations for the position.

Nomination Process:

An individual or group familiar with the service performed must submit an Outstanding Leader/Outstanding Volunteer Nomination Form that documents the service and its scope and impact to the Adult Awards Task Group by the due date indicated on the nomination form.

Outstanding Leader Award

The candidate must be a registered Girl Scout adult in a Leader/Advisor, Assistant Leader/Advisor, or Group Coordinator capacity. This person must have completed appropriate Leader/Advisor training or has demonstrated competence in a girl-adult partnership, communication, membership development, pluralism, and program delivery. The candidate's work with girls should exceed expectations for the position as outlined in the volunteer position description or agreement. The application must detail the candidate's accomplishments and outline how the service performed has benefited girls.

An individual or group familiar with the service performed must submit an Outstanding Leader/Outstanding Volunteer Nomination Form that documents the service and its scope and impact to the Adult Awards Task Group.  Individuals or groups familiar with the service performed submit two letters of endorsement.  Note:  persons submitting letters of endorsement must be different from the nominator

Community Award

The Community Award is a certificate recognizing an outstanding contribution by a community organization, business or individual, to a troop, group, service unit or the council.

Nomination Process:

Complete the Community Awards Nomination form and submit it to the Volunteer Development Department by the due date indicated.
