Girl Scout
in Africa
A GSCCC alumnae updates us on her
wild travels

GSCCC alumnae and
Gold Awardee Krista Patrick is
traveling through Malawi, Africa
over the summer with a Virginia Tech
study abroad program. She'll
be keeping us up to date on what
she's involved with through her
blog.
Letter from
Girl Scout Alumnae and Gold Award
Recipient Krista Patrick Student at
Virginia Tech
It's been a year since the
tragedy at my beloved Virginia Tech,
and I feel that now is a better time
than ever to thank you for your
unconditional support and concern
for my friends and I on that day and
during the last year. I could never
give each of you the thanks you
individually deserve, but please
know that every sentiment has left
an imprint on my heart.
It's been a trying year for each
of us here at Tech, but it has been
one filled with many amazing
memories and remembrance of those we
lost last year. I cannot believe
it's been a whole year since the
tragedy occurred. There has not been
a passing day I haven't thought
about that day, and I'm afraid it's
a memory I'll never escape. I cannot
find the words to tell you what it
feels like to sit in a classroom and
think that at any moment someone
could walk in and destroy our
precious lives or what it's like to
pass buildings on campus that
tragedy struck. I know this thought
is not uncommon in schools
throughout the country, and it pains
me to think this.

Despite this though, we've
continued to persevere in our
education, and believe me,
professors don't let us slack off! I
hope that in any way you were
affected that you too have
persevered in the past year.
All that I ask of you is that you
continue to remember April 16, 2007.
I do not ask that you remember the
violence or tragic deaths that
occurred on that day or dwell on how
incomprehensible the events still
are but that you remember the lives
of each individual and the
unyielding strength of my school.
Our SGA President put it best when
he said to choose one individual and
make a strong effort to remember
that person. Because there were so
many victims, it would be almost
impossible to remember each of their
lives years from now. By choosing
one and celebrating every great
accomplishment of their life, you
can pay tribute to all of the
victims. They would not want us to
forget them, and this is what I ask
of you. Remember.
Again, thank you for everything
during the last year. Your support
is a true testament to the kindness
and love of the human spirit. This
is what I choose to cherish in my
life, and it's all I need to
persevere.
Go Hokies!
All my love,
Krista
100th Birthday
Celebration!!

Girl Scout
troops from Virginia Beach spent
some of Memorial Day helping
celebrate the 100th birthday of
a former Girl Scout – Evelyn
Mason. The attended a party that
was held for Mason at the Our
Lady of Perpetual Healing
assisted living facility and
sang GS songs and happy
birthday. The former Girl Scout
smiled dujring the performances
and said they brought back fond
memories. The girls made a real
hit with Evelyn when they sang a
camp song, the moose is on the
loose, and created antlers that
waved to the tune!

Green Hat Society
Do you remember selling your first box of cookies? Standing with respect as you recited
the Girl Scout Promise and Law? Earning badges and patches? Perhaps you were not a girl
in Girl Scouting, but you served as an adult volunteer and have drifted away from an
organization that meant so much to you in younger years.
This is the time to reconnect with Girl Scouts! Join the Green Hat Society and rekindle
friendships, relive memories, build new contacts, attend interesting workshops and events,
learn some new skills and, most importantly, HAVE FUN!
We offer a number of opportunities for "Green Hatters" to be involved: socials, volunteering
with special projects, helping honor area Women of Distinction and mentoring girls.

Green Hats
Gather for a Tea at the
Albemarle Museum
Ruth
Crittenden and Anne Williams,
residents of Elizabeth City and
former Girl Scouts, were among a
group of women who attended a
Green Hat Society Tea at the
Albemarle Museum on Sunday,
September 17. Guests enjoyed
learning about the history of
tea and took part in a tea
tasting with Lynn Moore, a
member of the Green Hat Society
and owner of the Tea Cozy in
Chesapeake. They also toured Crafted Silver, a traveling
exhibit
of 18th
century silver that included tea
servings.
The
Green Hatters sponsor events,
community service projects and
workshops throughout the region.
They are former Girl Scouts who
want to stay connected with an
organization that played a key
role in their youth and
to offer support to the growing
organization today. Events,
such as the Tea,
give members an opportunity to
share fond memories. Ruth and
Anne recalled their years
growing up
in Elizabeth City, and
their experiences as members of
a Girl Scout troop of
twenty-five girls under the
direction of Mrs. Kathleen
Chesson. According to the two
women, the building currently
used as the Girl Scout Service
Center was first used by their
troop in the 1940’s – thanks to
Mrs.Chesson who arranged it with
the City.
“I
particularly recall a girl by
the name of Joan Rumsfeld in
scouting,” Ruth said. “We had a
great time together learning how
to play Bridge. I was surprised
to learn many years later, when
we were corresponding as adults,
that her brother is Donald
Rumsfeld, who is our country’s
Secretary of Defense! I
remembered he was real cute and
rode his bike around town. The
Rumsfeld family was stationed in
Elizabeth City during the war
years and lived in military
housing --
a neighborhood we referred to as
the Cabbage Patch because there
were so many houses all
together.”
Ruth and Anne recalled how much
fun they had in Girl Scouts
learning how to cook,
sew, and be proper hostesses,
but also remembered some
adventurous trips in canoes on
the river. Both women plan to
participate as troop guest
speakers in the coming year,
sharing their “herstory” with
area Girl Scouts during the
organization’s 95th
anniversary. If you would like
to volunteer to speak to troops
and share your memories, or help
at a 95th anniversary
event, call 547-4405, ext. 258,
or email Marcy at
marcyg@gsccc.org.
National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) Hosts Event to Help Girl Scout Council of Colonial Coast.
National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) announced that the Girl Scout Council of Colonial Coast (GSCCC) has been chosen as the organization to benefit from their NAWBO SEVA 2006 Holiday Gala and Charity Auction. Last year, over $7,000 was presented to an area charity and NAWBO is hoping that the amount will increase in 2006. Girl Scouts plan to use the money to offer a mentoring program for teen girls and introduce a special leadership session with area women CEO’s at Camp Skimino in 2007 – the 95th anniversary year of Girl Scouting.
More than 90 auction items will need to be collected by GSCCC for the Gala event’s silent auction. If you would like to donate an item or service, please contact the Council’s development director, Sharon Laderberg at 547-4405, ext. 247, or email her. The Girl Scouts will arrange for the item to be picked up and will provide you with a receipt.
Virginia Beach Senior Girl Scouts from troop 158 opened the 2006 National Association of Women Business Owner’s (NAWBO) annual dinner with a flag ceremony. Girl Scouts have been official community partners with NAWBO for the last six years. The girls were photographed with NAWBO members Rowena Fullinwider (left), owner of Rowena’s Gourmet Foods and lifetime Girl Scout, and Dory Wilgus, the 2006 Woman Entrepreneur of the Year. Dory Wilgus (center) owns and operates US Flag and Signal Company located in Portsmouth.
Camp Werewanee Reunion
Green Hats held a Camp
Werewanee Reunion in The Outback at A Place for Girls on Sunday, June 4. Forty former campers and staffers attended the reunion and shared memories and stories. Some recalled the words to the camp song! It was a special day for Evelyn Schmidt who was involved in day camp program for 33 years, with many of those years as
Werewanee Camp Director. Due to poor health this will be the first year she is not volunteering at Girl Scout day camp. The event was planned by Sue Aten who remains active in Girl Scouting as an outdoor trainer. Sue designed a reunion patch and, as a gift to each guests, presented them with one as a keepsake. The group plans to hold reunions in The Outback each summer.
Camp
Werewanee, a day camp that was started in the late 50’s in Chesapeake that accommodated Virginia Beach and Chesapeake Girl Scouts, dissolved in 1997 after the opening of A Place for Girls in 1996 and the start of the
Imagimazing Summer Fun day camp.

Francis Land House – Leadership Exhibit
In honor of the 25th anniversary of the Girl Scout Gold Award, an exhibit was placed at the Francis Land House during March, the Girl Scout birthday month, and was also shown at the Gold Award celebration held at A Place for Girls in May. The exhibit, which highlights the highest awards in Girl Scouting over the years, will continue to be expanded and will be included as one of the Council exhibits at next year’s 95th anniversary celebration. If you or someone you know received on of the top awards in Girl Scouts – golden Eaglet, First Class or Gold Award – please contact Marcy Germanotta so your name can be added to the Girl Scout “honor roll.”
